Foot of the Bed

I'm working on furniture plans for a very large master bedroom at the moment. I've come across some great ideas on replacing the standard bench or pair of stools for the foot of the bed. As you can see in some of the images below, placing a small sofa or settee at the foot creates a cozy little sitting or lounge area. It's a great, stylish way to break up the room and is also very functional.

Bamboo Chairs

I think I've finally decided on getting a cute little faux bamboo chair for my office. I think it would pair nicely with my desk. The desk is a flea market find with some classical detailing on it. It's a little beat up, but otherwise very charming. I prefer a painted chair in a fun color with a solid upholstered seat, or a white lacquer with a great print on the seat. I've rounded up some of the best examples of how to incorporate bamboo chairs into your home.

Here, Betsy Burnham painted a bamboo armchair powder blue and used it as a desk chair.

The Lonny Magazine office uses this bamboo chair as extra seating around a table. Perfect to pull up for an impromptu meeting.

Light and airy, it is the perfect choice to set aside a large window or glass door.

Nate Berkus uses a pair in his living room. They are easy to move and would be nicely suited to slide over next to the sofa during a cocktail party to allow a more intimate conversation.

This Elle Decor photo is an example of how bamboo chairs mix effortlessly with various styles and eras of furniture.

Palmer Weiss used this little cutie to place a stack of books. It is always at the ready should you need an extra seat.

Who What Wear

I know. You thought I fell off the face of the earth. Well, I am now the proud mama of a beautiful baby boy so my attentions have been elsewhere. Becoming a parent is a beautiful, tiring, humbling and endlessly rewarding experience but balancing everything in the beginning has proven to be a bit of a challenge. Hats off to the mothers who manage to do it all with style and grace. I am still striving to find that balance, but I am starting to get back into reading my favorite blogs and catching up on all that has been happening in the design social media world. Two of my absolutely favorite blogs/websites, the Coveteur and Who What Wear, gave a peek inside the offices of the WWW ladies. I am a huge fan of Katherine Power and Hilary Kerr. Not only are they at the forefront of the style and fashion scene, but they are successful and strong female entrepreneurs. Their offices are bright, light and airy with pops of color here and there. What a lovely place to work...

The new Lonny came out yesterday and it is FILLED with great inspiration. They were able to capture so many lovely homes, but my favorite is that of Nate Berkus design director Lauren Gold. I love how she mixes different eras and styles of furniture together. It's eclectic and earthy yet glamorous and feminine at the same time. Check it out...

Carry On Essentials

I just started pulling together my carry on bag for our trip. Here is a round up of the things I never travel without....

1. Reading material. This trip I will be taking An Object of Beauty by Steve Martin. Several people have recommended it and I can't wait to dive in. I'm sure I will pick up a few magazines at the airport as well.

2. Sunglasses. Classic Ray Ban Wayfarers are comfortable, always in style, and can handle crashing around in my purse without a case.

3. Scarf. I get really cold on airplanes so I always bring a scarf that doubles as a blanket. Love Quotes is my favorite brand. They aren't super expensive and they come in tons of fun colors. I also always pack a pair of Smart Wool socks to put on once I'm seated.

4. iPad. My sweet husband came home on Friday and surprised me with this new toy. I'm obsessed. Perfect to load up some movies or listen to some tunes while you are on the go.

5. Rodin Lip Balm. This is one of the best out there. Moisturizing and shiny without being sticky.

6. Tote. Clare Vivier Tropezienne leather bag. This is a classic bag that you will have forever.

7. Urbanears Medis Headphones. Functional and cute.

8. Nikon Coolpix. I like this one because it is small but takes great photos. The pink is also easier to find in the bottom of my purse than plain black.

What do you guys consider travel carry on essentials? I would love suggestions to add to my list!

Alameda Antique Faire

I did a lot of vintage shopping this past weekend and came up with pretty great finds. I bought a beautiful air plant at Flora Grubb Gardens, a pair of orange velvet wing chairs at Harrington's, a handsome wooden desk with neoclassical details at the SF Antique Mall and a pair of precious brass quails from the Candlestick Antique Faire. Phew! I am going to reupholster the chairs in two different fabrics as they will go in different rooms. The desk is going to get painted in a yet to be decided color. A Place to Dine

As you know, we moved into a new, smaller apartment about a month ago. I have been trying to get creative with the spatial layout. Most areas need to serve multiple functions. I decided to split the office from the dining area by putting a small round table and two chairs in one corner instead of using the desk as a dining table. Becky and I are hitting up some stores on Friday to search for the right one...preferably vintage. There is nothing I love more than a slick, remodeled kitchen with an antique rug. There is something so appealing about juxtaposing new and old. You want a kitchen to be simple, clean and functional. Materials like marble, tile and stainless steel need a little something to add warmth. The addition of an antique rug brings in color as well giving the space a little soul and history. I am a huge fan of the above kitchen...it's on my inspiration board at the moment.

I am so excited and proud of the table top I did for Matchbook Issue #3. Thank you to Katie and the Matchbook team for inviting me to participate. I think it turned out pretty well, if I do say so myself. My bestie and floral designer Danielle Rowe lent her keen design eye to the table top design as well as executing the beautiful flowers. The table setting had a ton of personal touches. Fellow interior designer Rebecca Loewke and her mother sewed the napkins and table runners! Also, the Tiffany's bamboo flatware was my wedding silver, so it holds a special place in my heart. I have always loved John Robshaw's Noah's Ark crib bedding. It is so charming with a beautiful hand made quality to it. Unfortunately, it's $525 for the set. I was in Target today and saw the Dwell Studio for Target line. They have a design called Menagerie that is equally adorable and a bit more modern looking. I love the stylized animals with the lime piping and contrasting ticking stripe. It is 100% cotton and you can get the three piece set for $75!

I had lunch with Catherine of Rikshaw the other day and we were both gushing over how much we loved Tia Zoldan's home as featured in the premier issue of High Gloss Magazine. Tia's house was in Cottage Living ages ago, and it is one of the first interiors I ever really fell head over heels for. It's most recent incarnation is even better than the first. It is eclectic yet polished and I love how she layered various patterns, textures and finishes. It feels very tailored yet comfortable. Enjoy!

I have been pulling tons of nursery inspiration images in preparation for designing one of my own. I don't know if it is a girl or boy yet, so I have been collecting everything. One of my favorite girl's rooms that I have come across is one designed by Caitlin Wilson for her daughter Olivia. I love the lavender and lime palette, and I'm obsessed with the trim on the lamp shade and bedskirt. Oh, and she has the Rikshaw bedding and elephant pillow that I adore. So cute!

I fell in love with Sheryl Crow's Hollywood home that was featured in this month's Architectural Digest. As you may know by now, I'm a SoCal girl at heart. Growing up there has made me a total sucker for anything Spanish influenced and I am eternally drawn to the laid back, casual living. Healdsburg Highlights

We had a wonderful weekend in Healdsburg. Friday was about relaxing at the hotel and getting spa treatments. Then we met up with friends for a decadent dinner at Cyrus. We started with the caviar and champagne service (I know, sounds ridiculous but it was such a treat) and then had a 6 course meal. It was really fun, but I think I am still in a food coma. The next morning we had BLT's for lunch at Ravenous and then hit up a winery in Russian River. Lynmar has the best outdoor patio where you can sip your wine and gaze out at the vineyards. It was unseasonably warm and sunny out and we took advantage and lounged outside for about an hour at Lynmar. All in all, the perfect little relaxing weekend.

Healdsburg Bound

I am heading *here* this weekend. Healdsburg is one of my favorite areas in California wine country. It a lot less touristy than other parts and they have cute stores, great antiquing and amazing restaurants. Check, check and check! Oh, and Hotel Healdsburg also has a wonderful spa where, I must admit, I have already made a couple appointments. I am so looking forward to a little down time with the hubby. I hope you all enjoy your weekend.

New Picks from Wisteria

I really love this Wood and Iron "X" Back Bookcase from Wisteria. It's sleek and I like the industrial look and combination of materials.

I adore this Mid-Century Modern Console Table as well. The gentle curves and simplicity of the design is lovely. I really think this piece could blend seamlessly into most interiors.

The Handsome Cabriole Leg Chair is another easy piece. I like the natural wood and cabriole legs coupled with the more masculine suit-like pin stripe fabric.

Who doesn't need this Diamond Patterned Ceramic Stool? It could serve as the perfect little side table or some extra seating in a pinch. Plus, it would add some great texture to a room. It's a classic.

While perusing my favorite blog the other day, Remodelista, I came across a post they did about Virginia Johnson. I bought one of her adorable kelly green scarves with a rose pattern on it about two years ago and have loved it ever since. I had no idea that she had expanded her line from scarves to clothing, prints, bedding, totes, decorative pillows and rugs. Everything she makes is adorable (I have my eye on the totes...they would be perfect for fabric shopping!) but I particularly like the hand screened fine art prints. The colors are great and how cute is that little turtle!?

I am in the market for some 70's bell bottom inspired jeans. I can't quite decide if I want a pair with a high waist, trouser details or something more true to the original that tapers at the knee with a big flare at the cuff. Lulu's Living Room

I woke up a bit under the weather today with a sinus headache and a scratchy throat, so I plan on taking it easy. Nothing can cheer me up like Lulu de Kwiatkowski's living room that was featured in Lonny Magazine awhile back. Besides being light, bright and cheery, I love how personalized the space is. Family photos are blown up and used as art on the walls in this room as well as throughout the house. Isn't the underwater photo of her husband and child adorable?

Happy Monday all! I don't know about you but I am having a really hard time getting going this morning. I came across this image in my inspiration files and thought it was an appropriate one to start the week. The materials used...stone, wood, leather, iron, linen and wicker...are earthy and the color scheme is really tranquil. I love the arched windows and exposed beams. The whole room has a calm and relaxing vibe to it, and the view doesn't hurt either!

I just love this barn designed by Erin Martin in Napa. The rustic chic western decor is, well, just plain cool...an EMD specialty. It was designed and decorated with entertaining in mind. As I was sourcing some lighting for a project, I came across this image from Carrie and Big's apartment in the Sex and the City movie. Isn't it great!? I love pieces that blend seamlessly in traditional as well as modern interiors. This 9-globe bubble pendant is from Lindsey Adelman Studio. It comes in a variety of finishes and glass options. It's so versatile and unexpected. I would personally put it over a round hallway table (a la Carrie and Big) or over a dining table. I'm in love.

ALC Resort

Natural & Textured

Well, the holiday break is over and it is onward and upward into 2011. I came across the beautiful image in the upper left hand corner sometime ago and I instantly fell in love with it. I love the natural elements and colors with the pop of gold and glimmer of crystal. Everything in this image also has a lovely texture whether it be faceted, engraved, inlaid or the soft surface of the hydrangea petal. I have several weddings to go to early in the year, so of course I am already figuring out what I want to wear. I am always drawn to colors you find in nature and I love the little extra details that a ruffle or pleat can add to an outfit. Above are a few picks that I think will make for an adorable wedding ensemble. I have a pair of nude pumps and I'm thinking I will add a little fur jacket/stole for the wedding back east in February...brrr.

Since I'm up in the mountains right now, I think this picture truly captures the beauty and peace that freshly fallen snow adds to a landscape. It really is a little bit magical. Snowed In

Hi there! I took a little technology holiday hiatus but now I'm back. My family and I are on vacation in Tahoe until Monday, and we've been having an amazing time. It snowed 35" last night. That much snow is quite a sight! We spent 2 hours digging the car out of the driveway, and then couldn't ski because of high winds and avalanche warnings. Tomorrow is supposed to be sunny so keep your fingers crossed! Here a couple gorgeous photos taken of our street and deck views by my mother-in-law. Enjoy!

Southern Infusion

I loved Angele Parlange's West Village home in the latest issue of Lonny. The mixture of eras, styles, materials and colors is enchanting. Parlange, a multi-generation New Orleans native, was fortuitously visiting Sag Harbor when Katrina hit and she has been in New York ever since. Although she has now relocated to Manhattan, her Southern roots are evident in her decorating. She repurposes family heirlooms and pays homage to the past while sprinkling in decidedly current elements. I just love how warm and inviting her home feels, don't you agree?

Comstock Saloon

I can't wait to swing by the Comstock Saloon in San Francisco. Doesn't it look like a great place to spend an evening hanging out with friends? The saloon is named after Henry Comstock and the Comstock Lode, which brought mining fortunes to San Francisco and played a large role in the city's growth. The saloon occupies a historic space that has served as a watering hole since 1907...an important element in a city that had just endured a massive earthquake and subsequent fires in 1906. Just like it's original incarnations, the Comstock Saloon still offers classic cocktails like the Manhattan and serves refined saloon fare. Oh, and did I mention that the saloon keepers are Jeff Hollinger and Jonny Raglin of Absinthe fame? Now you know the cocktails must be good with these two behind the bar.

I heart Amsterdam

When I saw these gorgeous images of a snowy and magical Amsterdam by Pia Jane Bijkerk on Apartment34 a few days ago I was so excited! I spent a week in Amsterdam this Summer and completely fell in love with the city. Forget Paris...I would take Amsterdam over Paris any day. In my opinion, it is hands down the most charming city. Not only is it a progressive city, both socially and in terms of design, but the people are the nicest you will find anywhere. The architecture also captured my heart. How can you not be taken with the 17th century houses that line the canals? I love how the Dutch respect and preserve the old while simultaneously embracing what is modern and new. I shudder to think what I was doing/wearing at 12, but I certainly wasn't this mature and pulled together! Happy Monday! I had a lovely weekend. It was raining pretty much all weekend so my husband and I hunkered it for the duration. I love it when Winter really kicks in and you can build a fire and wrap yourself up in a blanket on the sofa and watch a movie. Total bliss.

Inspired Entertaining: AE Planning & Design

In preparing for the holidays, I think it is always important to embrace one key thing: make it fun! For most of us, the holidays are the only time we really get to spend time with our families and friends, so it's really important to acknowledge that and make sure it's an enjoyable time. Working in the wedding industry, I've picked up quite a few party tricks that would be really fun to translate to your holiday party decor.

1. Select a color scheme. If you are into the modern look, add white with splashes of a single color, like red. I love the textural effect of white hydrangeas or carnations in clean white porcelain vessels. Try wrapping the vessel with ribbon or baker's twine. Ikea is a great resource for these.

2. Set up a photo booth! No need to hire a whole photobooth for your holiday party, instead you can invest in a couple polaroids and make a corner dedicated to snapshots. You can use old Christmas decorations as props and make a backdrop out of wrapping paper.

3. Dessert buffet. You'll probably have a massive amount of dessert at youR holiday party but it's all about how you display them. A table full of homemade treats is drool worthy, especially if they're labeled in cute and creative ways.

4. Goodie bags. In the wedding world, welcome bags are a must at destination weddings, but why stop there? Consider giving your guests a gift to go. A New Year's Eve kit would be a really exciting surprise- you could include a champagne split, noise makers, sparklers and 2011 glasses.

5. Create a pattern story. I'm really digging stripes right now. Add a little color to your holiday dinner with striped paper placemats from Carrot & Stick, or you could make your own red and white seersucker napkins. All you need is a bolt of fabric and simply cut 22" squares. You can allow the edges to fray, or sew a seam along the perimeter to keep the fraying to a minimum.

6. Mexican hanging flags are a big wedding trend, so I think it would be fun to play on that in displaying all those holiday cards you receive. String them on some twine and display them in a long hallway, or even an empty wall.

7. S'mores!! What better way to get everyone gathered together than having a s'more-off? Gather the best chocolate and marshmallows you can get your hands on and challenge your friends and family to a s'mores battle. Believe it or not, we have s'mores at a lot of our weddings. Hopefully that's a trend that will stick around for a long time...

At the end of the day, the most important part of the holidays is spending time with people you love. So light the fireplace, cozy up in some furry blankets and enjoy the down time!

All That Glitters is Gold

I went to the new Erica Tanov at the Marin Country Mart in Larkspur the other day and picked up some goodies for myself (a Megan Park pillow!) and a few holiday gifts. It is a beautifully curated little shop that was designed by Douglas Burnham of Envelope A+D. The show stopper, in my opinion, is the wall of brass discs. Upon closer inspection you would see that each has been individually mounted by hand, a process that took two people a week to complete. It was worth it, because it is absolutely stunning!

Inspired Tablescapes: Janel Holiday Design

The next holiday tablescape in this series is designed by San Francisco based interior designer and fellow blogger Janel Holiday. Enjoy...

For my holiday table this year I am inspired by Miu Miu's Fall/Winter 2010 ad campaign. Miu Miu is always forward thinking with their mix of materials, patterns, textures and colors. Always fabulous- always with a surprise thrown in.

1. concise + clear shapes: simple white dishes from cb2
2. unexpected texture: birch plywood trees. I am loving everything from Lovi right now- a Finnish design company that creates "visually sophisticated and enchanting three-dimensional objects based on a patented joint system"...via DesignStory- where they have an awfully good deal going on right now with all things Lovi. I would start off with several of their 13" high birch plywood Christmas trees loading up the center of the tables.
3. cool color: all light green Miniballs by Lovi would decorate the trees. They look like little felt origami gems and remind me of those great lavender wool pockets above.
4. nod to the past: Rosenthal TAC 02 stemware by Walter Gropius
5. animal-life: Miu Miu used the swallow heavily on their Spring shoe line and I would place these cuties (again, Lovi) on every plate with a handmade place card.
6. sculpture: loads of candlelight with these candlesticks from IKEA.
7. graphic power: these cotton and linen placemats and napkins by Dwell Studio give just the right grounding power and fun element...reminiscent of the cutouts in the Miu Miu dresses.
8. hardware: the knife fork spoon flatware by Jasper Morrison for Alessi is elegant but edgy.
9. one more pop of color: taper candles from Sur La Table.

Weekend Getaway

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! The hubby and I are off to Tahoe for the rest of the holiday to relax and get a little skiing in. I like to ski, but my husband LOVES to ski and one of his dreams is to someday have a mountain house. We've been known to carry on hypothetical conversations about said mountain house. He throws around ideas about where it would be located...affordable spots like Tahoe (on the water, of course!), Aspen, Vail, Whistler etc. I tend to sprinkle in ideas about how we would decorate it and what holidays we would spend there with the family. Yep, we're cool like that. Anywho, while flipping through the pages of the December Elle Decor I stopped dead in my tracks when I came upon the Ketchum, Idaho home of Lynn and Rusty Turner. It is the perfect hypothetical dream mountain home to aspire to. I have a weak spot for rustic chic interiors, and this one is also really comfortable and approachable. Needless to say, we won't be staying anywhere near this fancy this weekend...but it sure is fun to dream! Have a great weekend.

thanks amanda for having me! i have always LOVED to set a table, my mom used to make me and my sister do it every holiday! I love going and grabbing branches from outside and bring them indoors, lighting the candles, putting a little gift or placecard at each spot! i think i go a bit overboard on the table because the food is questionable?...I am learning though and things are getting tastier!

fresh flowers, branches are a must at every table...and i am loving throwing in some feathers for fall!

linens are the fashion for the table, i love these beatiful block-printed napkins from Les indiennes...(no surprise there right?)

i have a soft spot for mercury tealights and vases, especially the vintage speckled kind..gives the table some glitz

i covet austier de villatte table top, each piece is original and looks one of a kind...someday i want a cupboard full!

juliska glassware is only used on special occasions, its so thin and delicate...

a beautiful wooden serving piece, is the last element that finishes it up for me..

Barn Doors, Inside

Lately I've been thinking a lot about getting back into riding. I grew up riding hunters and jumpers and before I found my calling as an interior designer, rode professionally for a number of years. I haven't been on a horse in about 4 years now and only recently have I actually felt the draw to go back. As I was contemplating my return to the barn this morning I was recalling an image I had recently seen that used a sliding barn door as a space saving solution in a tiny, rustic powder room. I love implementing unexpected solutions to design dilemmas. Sure, a pocket door would work too, but isn't this so much more fun? Enjoy...

Breakfast Banquette

I love a little breakfast nook with a banquette. They are cozy, comfy and family friendly. It's also an opportunity to add storage if you do a built-in or to add some texture and pattern through upholstery fabric and throw pillows. Even if you only have a tiny little corner, you can create a great dining or gathering area simply by adding a settee, small round table and a pair of chairs. I'm currently designing one for a friend, and I thought I would share some of the inspiration images I pulled together...

Ba da dun. I couldn't resist. Sorry. I have kitchens on the brain at the moment and I had to share this one with you. This is the sleek and charming kitchen of polo player Nachos Figueras and his family. I love the combination of the modern, clean lined black cabinetry with wide metal pulls, concrete floors and bright white walls with the retro clock & table cloth. The woven pendant and turquoise chairs really add to the character of the room as well. It's not fancy, but it has a warmth, style and lived in feel that I find especially appealing. It also doesn't hurt that it's on a horse farm in Buenos Aires.

I l.o.v.e. Carey Mulligan's pleated chartreuse Proenza Schouler dress. It's not for everyone, but I think it looks stunning on her. Young, hip and lady like. It's a little more yellow than my new color obsession that is Pantone's warm olive 15-0646. I know, everyone is supposed to be into Fall colors right now...orange, brown, red, blah. This is so much more fresh don't you think?

I had the pleasure of laying my eyes on one of these little cuties this past weekend. I was staying at a house that had one on their property as an extra sleeping solution. Genius, no? This peanut-sized DWR airstream is incredibly well designed and functional. It's compact, but all the necessary amenities are present. I'm a little smitten.

Inspiration Sheet: Eclectic Home Office

Last week I posted some inspiration images I've collected over the years of office spaces that I love. One of those images was the overwhelming favorite as gauged by all of your comments. I couldn't agree more as I love the mixture of textures, materials and balance of masculine and feminine shapes and objects. So, I've assembled a Get The Look scheme to help you all achieve the look of this room by yourselves. All you would need to do to personalize this space is take a trip to the flea market and scope out a quirky waste basket and containers for your pens/pencils/paperclips etc. You could also frame some of your favorite family photos or pieces of art and lean them up against the wall either on the desk or on the floor. It's casual but pulled together. Enjoy!

Eco Chic, Venice Beach

A friend of mine recently stayed in the Eco Cottages in Venice Beach with her family, and she had nothing but great things to say about it. You can choose between three cozy little beach bungalows that were recently renovated using all eco friendly products and locally procured goods. These sustainable vacation homes are each named differently and thus decorated according to their title. The Papa Hemingway has a warm and masculine energy to it while Aunt Zoe's Place is reminiscent of a 1940's lakeside cabin and Le Bebe is designed to evoke the decadence of 1960's Paris with a "candied Baroque" theme throughout. I am definitely going to check these out the next time I'm down in LA. Cottages run for $215-$250 a night. Rumor has it they even have beach cruisers you can borrow to ride around town...just like a local!

Office Space: Round Up #2

Here's submission #2 for my office re-design inspiration. I pulled these out of the archives. I like each of these for very different reasons. Some are just styled to perfection, some are eclectic and look like an office you would really work in, and yet others appeal to me for inexplicable reasons. I just like the vibe. A couple things you should know before we start this together...

1. My office is also our dining room.

2. We rent, so built-ins are a total pipe dream.

3. Our house is on a hill which settles constantly (ie our floors are NOT level), so nothing on wheels or I'll roll away!

4. An inspiration board is a MUST...but again, it's our dining room. What to do, what to do?

5. Storage, storage, storage.

I think I'll settle on a layout tomorrow or the next day and then let's go over the shopping/to do list so I can get this rolling. Have a great day...I'll be at jury duty. :/ (Am I the only person that gets summoned every single year? My files must be labeled sucker.) Enjoy the eye candy...

Today I am totally sinking. It's getting so busy over here that treading water is an understatement. As the need to be more and more efficient increases I realize how many "holes" there are in my workspace. I'm in need of a total overhaul. I'm starting to gather inspiration for my work space re-design, and the office that jumped out at me was Betsy Burnham's featured in Lonny Magazine. Not only is it stylish and hip but it's functional and maximizes the existing space beautifully. Submission #1 for my dream space...
